Historic Power Plant Re-energized

The Contemporary Jewish Museum rehabilitates the historic Jessie Street Substation in San Francisco

The historic Jessie Street Power Substation is re-energized by a stunning remodeling by architect Daniel Libeskind to become the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.  Tucked into a courtyard between busy Market Street and Yerba Buena Gardens, it’s a beautiful addition to the neighborhood.  The Jessie Street Power Substation was designed by Willis Polk in 1907 and was saved from demolition by San Francisco Architectural Heritage in the 1970s.  Although it remained abandoned for years, the wait was worth it.
