Cliff May’s San Diego Homes on Tour

The “Save Our Heritage Organisation” is developing a tour of Cliff May’s early houses in San Diego on Sunday, March 27, 2011 from 10 am to 5 pm.  Tickets are $35.  May’s houses from the 1930s are the most rustic and charming of the thousands of houses he designed; during the 1940s he takes a turn towards the contemporary ranch.  Included is the Highland House in Presidio Hills, one of the best of his early designs, and includes a fabulous garden that was recently featured on the Victory Garden television series.

For those who are real buffs, you may want to spend the weekend.   Saturday, March 26, will include lectures (including two illustrated talks on Cliff May’s early career by this blog’s very own Mary van Balgooy) and a cocktail reception in a Cliff May house, and both days features a sale on Spanish Colonial Revival decor, books, and furnishings.  Before he became the father of the ranch house, May was an up and coming jazz musician and his band played at the luxurious U. S. Grant Hotel in downtown, so if you want to splurge, that’s a very good choice.
