John A. Smith House in La Habra Heights

One of the first significant house for Cliff May in Los Angeles County is the John A. Smith House at 760 Via Miguel in La Habra Heights (California), built from 1934-36.  Set on a hill and ringed by a wall, it is difficult to see from the street but appears to have survived with its historical integrity intact (it was listed for sale in late 2008 and the real estate listings show a fabulous four bedroom house with a beautiful interior courtyard, so it hasn’t been demolished).  It was published as the “Ranch House of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Smith” in Architectural Digest (IX: 4) with seven images (two appear in an article at the back).  We’ve just acquired a copy of this magazine so here’s a sampling:
